Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty

The labia, as part of the female genitalia, border the vaginal entrance, urethral opening, and the clitoris. The larger labia (outer labia) are external, formed by a skin fold, while the inner labia consist of a skin-mucosal fold transitioning into the vagina. At the GIA clinic, labiaplasty involves the gentle reduction of the inner labia so that they do not extend beyond the outer labia and are symmetrical. The clitoral area is usually left untouched to maintain its sensitivity. If the labial tissue overly covers the clitoris, a slight exposure can be performed to enhance its sensitivity. This procedure is done at the GIA clinic under local anesthesia, with the patient positioned on a surgical gynecological table. For a youthful appearance of the genital area, we can also augment the outer labia with the patient’s own fat (a gentle lipotransfer) or apply hyaluronic acid—an option in high demand internationally.

Labiaplasty is intended for all women who have experienced post-birth changes to the inner labia or those who were born with abnormalities, such as irregular shape or length of the inner labia. Often, these abnormalities are bilateral and can disrupt or prevent a fulfilling intimate life, make it difficult to wear swimsuits, underwear, or tight clothing, and may even interfere with physical activities like sports or long walks, where labial chafing can occur.

The procedure is available to any woman over 18 (though it may be performed earlier with parental consent). It is also worth considering the timing of the surgery for women planning to have children, as post-birth changes could affect the surgical outcome.

During labiaplasty, the inner labia are reduced to ensure they are not larger than the outer labia and are symmetrical. The clitoral area is typically left untouched to preserve its sensitivity. However, if the inner labial tissue overly covers the clitoris, a slight exposure can be performed to improve sensitivity.

Every case depends on the agreement between the client and the surgeon during a preoperative consultation. During this personal meeting, all options and recommendations are discussed, based on the client’s wishes, labial proportions, and other relevant factors.

Improved Comfort and Functionality: Reducing overly large or asymmetrical labia can alleviate discomfort, chafing, and other physical issues related to clothing or physical activity.
Aesthetic Enhancement: The procedure can boost a woman's self-confidence and satisfaction with her body, especially in intimate situations.
Reduction of Health Complications: The procedure can lower the risk of infections and skin irritations caused by excessively large or asymmetrical labia.

Before the procedure

The first step is an initial consultation aimed at providing the client with maximum information about the procedure, including the surgical process, incision sites, potential risks, contraindications, local anesthesia, and any possible complications.

The client must obtain standard preoperative tests (basic lab tests, ECG, etc.) from their general practitioner. The specific tests required depend on the client’s health status and age. It’s recommended to stop any medication that may increase bleeding, with consultation from a general practitioner. However, stable contraceptives do not need to be discontinued.

If the client has a regular menstrual cycle, it’s ideal to schedule the procedure after menstruation, as surgeries are not performed during the menstrual period. The client should take precautions against infections and colds, as an active cold sore is a contraindication for surgery. The current health status is also evaluated, with a recommended wait period of 2–3 months after any recent infectious illness.

We advise avoiding alcoholic drinks and coffee for 24 hours before the procedure. On the day of the surgery, clients should bathe, avoid lotions or creams, shave the operated area the day before (not the day of), refrain from makeup, and ensure nails are polish-free. Additionally, clients should remove any removable prosthetics, glasses, jewelry, contact lenses, or hearing aids before the operation.

The course of the procedure

Labiaplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. During the procedure, the client lies on the operating table in a gynecological position. A thorough photo documentation is taken, and precise medical markings are made on the skin in the labial area.

Once again, the client is briefed on the procedure, including the steps involved, incision locations, and other specifics. The surgeon removes excess tissue with an incision along the length of the labia. The mucous membranes are closed with absorbable sutures in the same direction as the incision. Absorbent dressings are applied to the surgical wounds.

The surgery typically lasts 2–3 hours. Postoperative care is then managed by the client herself.

After the procedure

GIA clinic s.r.o. advises clients to prepare their home environment so they can avoid physically demanding tasks and strenuous activities for at least 7 days post-surgery. Returning to work or driving is typically recommended only after 2–7 days, depending on how the client feels. Due to the sensitivity in the intimate area, most clients find it difficult to engage in such activities earlier than the advised 2–7 weeks.

The client must personally manage the avoidance of any activities that could negatively impact the healing process, paying close attention to her safety and strictly following medical recommendations. Home-based postoperative care is essential for the success of any surgical procedure.

Physical activity and sports are advised only after 2–3 weeks post-surgery. For sexual activity, a waiting period of 2–3 weeks is also recommended. Pain management at home can be achieved with over-the-counter analgesics, typically needed only for 2–3 days as prescribed by the surgeon. Additional care instructions (such as scar care and sun exposure) are provided after surgery.

The outcome is regularly monitored through follow-up appointments at GIA clinic s.r.o., but the final results are expected about 3 months post-surgery.

Contraindications of the procedure

The suitability of the procedure depends on the specific condition and the client’s overall health. Key contraindications include acute or chronic infections, active cold sores, autoimmune diseases, severe allergic reactions, the acute phase of malignant diseases, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and other serious health conditions identified during the consultation with the client interested in the procedure.
