Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, often known as a tummy tuck or tummy tuck, is one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries in the field of plastic surgery. This procedure can significantly improve the appearance of the abdomen and help patients achieve their dream figure. Abdominoplasty is undergone by people who are struggling with loose or wrinkled skin, flabby abdominal muscles after hormonal changes, significant weight loss, pregnancy, or as a simple result of aging.

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. This procedure also involves firming the abdominal wall by suturing together the separated abdominal muscles, resulting in an overall improvement in the shape and firmness of the abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is suitable for men and women who:

  • Have excess skin on the abdomen that does not respond to diet or exercise.
  • Suffers from weakened or separated abdominal muscles.
  • Have reached a stable weight and have no plans for significant weight loss or weight gain. Women need to consider any subsequent pregnancy that could lead to the outcome of the surgery being thwarted.
  • Are in good health and have no serious health problems that could complicate surgery or recovery.

Abdominoplasty can also be combined with liposuction or the operation can be performed on a smaller scale as a so-called mini-abdominoplasty (partial abdominoplasty).

However, it always depends on the agreement between the client and the operating physician during the pre-operative personal consultation, where all options and recommendations are discussed based on the client’s wishes, the client’s disposition, body proportions, etc.

Improving Body Aesthetics: by removing sagging skin and reducing excess fat, the appearance of the abdominal area is improved, leading to greater self-confidence.
Abdominoplasty can include abdominal muscle strengthening, which improves posture and can help with lower back problems.
Lasting Result: with a healthy lifestyle, the result of the procedure is long-lasting.

Before surgery

The first step is a preliminary consultation, the aim of which is to inform the client about the course of the surgical procedure, the management of surgical incisions, the risks of the procedure, contraindications, anaesthesia and possible complications.
The client must have a routine pre-operative examination (basic laboratory tests, ECG, etc.) from his/her general practitioner. The actual examination requirements are based on the health condition or age of the person undergoing surgery.
Discontinuation of all medications that increase bleeding is recommended – discussion with the GP is required.
If the client is a woman, discontinuation of contraceptives is advisable, as they increase the risk of embolization by up to 4 times (the discontinuation itself makes sense at least two months before the procedure and must be by agreement with the gynaecologist).
Before the procedure, the client should not starve or follow any dietary regimes and should protect himself/herself from infection and colds, and should not have an active cold sore of the lip.
Current health status – it is important that the client protects herself/himself from illness or infection – there should be a 2 – 3 month gap between surgery and the onset of an infectious disease.
The client must be hungry prior to the procedure – no eating, drinking or smoking (at least 6 hours). 24 hours prior to the procedure we recommend no alcoholic beverages or coffee.
It is advisable to take a bath on the day of the procedure, not to apply any body lotions or creams, not to make up and to have nails (on hands and feet) varnished.
Remove removable dentures, glasses, jewellery, piercings, contact lenses, hearing aids before surgery.

The course of the surgery

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. Generally, this surgical procedure at GIA clinic s.r.o. is associated with a one-day stay, where the clients are taken care of individually and with due tact by a team of qualified medical staff.
A thorough photographic documentation and a careful medical sketch with a marker on the skin of the abdomen is taken with the client. Again, it is explained to the client what will be done and how, where the incisions will be made, etc.
The surgeon makes the incision according to the previous consultation with the client – either horizontal above the pubic area – i.e. in the place where the scar is subsequently covered by underwear or vertical with a horizontal incision, where the incision is also made above the pubic area and perpendicularly from the navel downwards, followed by repositioning of the navel. In the latter case, the scar takes the shape of an inverted T.
The surgeon then loosens the skin and the subcutaneous tissue up to the level of the ribs and tightens the skin by pulling it down, removing the excess skin and sewing together the separated abdominal muscles.
At the GIA clinic, drains are inserted into the operated area to drain tissue secretions and blood (drainage of these fluids aids healing and eliminates possible inflammation).
Incisions (cuts) are usually closed with absorbable sutures.
Surgical wounds are covered with special plasters. The operation itself usually takes 2 to 3 hours. After the procedure (still in the operating room), the client’s abdomen is fixed with a special firming compression corset (we individually order it for the client in advance at our clinic based on the doctor’s measurements on the day of the consultation) – followed by the post-operative care phase by the client himself/herself.

After the procedure

GIA clinic s.r.o. recommends that the client prepares his/her home so that he/she does not have to strain his/her abdominal muscles and perform more demanding household chores for at least 7 – 14 days.
Return to work, sexual activity is recommended after 7 – 14 days. Of course, it depends on how the client feels, but the sensitivity of the abdomen (in the form of pulling on the abdominal area) in most cases will not even allow activity before the mentioned 2 weeks.
Suspension of all activities that adversely affect healing must be considered in the home environment by the client/client himself/herself, keeping his/her safety in mind at all times and remembering the doctor’s recommendations.
Home post-operative care is integral to the success of any surgical procedure.
Physical activity and active sports are recommended in a strengthening corset for at least 6-8 weeks after surgery.
In the home setting, pain is managed with commonly available analgesics that the surgeon will recommend taking (usually taking for 2 – 3 days is sufficient).
The special corset is worn by the client for at least 6 weeks (preferably 8 weeks) and is removed only minimally (for personal hygiene).
Further recommendations and information (scar care, sun care, etc.) will be given by the doctor after the surgery.
The result of the surgery is continuously monitored during personal check-ups at the GIA clinic, but the final result will be 6 – 12 months after the surgery.

Contraindications to the procedure

It depends on the disease and your overall health.
The main contraindications include: acute or chronic infections, lip herpes, autoimmune diseases, severe allergic conditions, acute phase of malignant disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding in women and other serious diseases identified during the interview with the client – the person interested in the procedure.
