Treatment of varicose veins using the classic method

Treatment of varicose veins using the classic method

The basic operation for varicose veins. The procedure is fully covered by insurance. It involves the removal of a large superficial vein to which secondary veins are connected. The entire treatment is always performed under general anesthesia.

Varicose veins are caused by weakening of the connective tissue in the vein wall, which gradually leads to the vein widening and becoming twisted. They usually occur in the lower limbs. Typical symptoms accompanying this disease are exertional pain and rapid fatigue. It is the most common venous disease, affecting up to half of our population in older age, with women being more susceptible to this disease. Genetics, female hormones, and pregnancy play a major role in the occurrence of this disease. In addition to these main factors, our unhealthy lifestyle also contributes to the development of varicose veins. In particular, it is necessary to mention lack of exercise, smoking, obesity, and static strain on the lower limbs, i.e., prolonged standing or sitting. The classic method is one of the treatments for varicose veins that is still used today, and in some cases, it is the only treatment indicated.

Complete Removal of Damaged Veins: This method allows for the complete removal of damaged large surface veins, resulting in a permanent solution to the problem.
Coverage by insurance: Unlike other methods, this procedure is fully covered by health insurance, which reduces the financial burden on patients.
Suitable for Extensive Venous Disease: The classic method is often indicated in patients with more extensive varicose vein disease, where less invasive methods may not be sufficiently effective.

How it works
In the classic surgical method, an incision must be made in the groin and the tributaries of the large vein must be ligated, followed by the vein itself, which must then be removed up to the knee, or conversely, the vein must be removed from the ankle to the groin.
Other pre-marked varicose veins are removed during the operation. Due to possible complications and pain, we always operate on only one limb at a time, with the other limb being operated on after the previous operation has healed – approximately 3 months.

Practical advice for patients
The patient must make an appointment in advance for a consultation with the doctor who will perform the treatment. During the consultation, the client will receive all the necessary information from the attending physician.

  • The patient must undergo a general preoperative examination by their general practitioner (the patient will receive all necessary referral forms from their doctor during the consultation).
  • It is also recommended to discontinue all medications that increase bleeding – this must be discussed with the general practitioner.
  • If the client is a woman, it is advisable to stop taking contraceptives, which increase the risk of embolism by up to 4 times (it is advisable to stop taking them at least two months before the procedure and this must be agreed with a gynecologist).
  • Before the procedure, the client should not fast or follow any diet regimens and should protect themselves from infection and colds; they must not have active cold sores.
  • The interval between surgery and an infectious disease is 2–3 months.
  • The client must be fasting before the procedure – they must not eat, drink, or smoke for at least 6 hours before the procedure.
  • We recommend not consuming alcoholic beverages or coffee 24 hours before the procedure.
  • It is advisable to bathe on the day of the procedure, not to apply any body lotions or creams, not to wear makeup, and to have your nails (both hands and feet) free of nail polish.

After the procedure, it is necessary to arrange for someone to accompany you and drive you home from our clinic.

Unlike other methods, the classic method is more painful after the procedure, requires more frequent wound dressings, and requires wearing bandages for at least 14 days. Once the pain subsides, it is possible to wear compression stockings.
This type of procedure always requires a minimum of one day of hospitalization.
The recovery period ranges from 6 to 8 weeks. Sick leave is always necessary.
Sports activities can be resumed after about 6 weeks, provided that healing is progressing well.
